In 2007, Story County Home Inspections, LLC was founded by Adam and Ruth Wagner. Adam grew up on a farm in Minnesota, where he developed strong great mechanical skills and the ability to fix just about anything. He furthered his skills in the welding, renovation, and heating, ventilations, and air conditioning (HVAC) trades. His wife, Ruth, also grew up in Minnesota. Upon moving to Iowa, she earned her doctorate in Genetics at Iowa State University. Their journey has taken them to Minnesota, the Netherlands, and now Missouri. Adam currently owns and operates Vintage Home Services, offering HVAC, home maintenance, plumbing, electrical, insulation, and vapor barrier services. Ruth currently works in the AG Biotech industry. They are parents to Shae, Laci, & Russel.
As coworkers, Adam and Jeff Spencer had multiple conversations about Story County Home Inspections, LLC. In 2009, Adam approached Jeff about purchasing the business. Jeff & Cheryl Spencer decided to purchase the company at that time, with Jeff initially conducting the inspections outside his regular full-time job hours in the evenings and weekends. In 2011, the company transitioned to a full-time business for Jeff.
Established in 2007 by Adam and Ruth Wagner, the business was purchased in 2009 by Jeff & Cheryl Spencer. Story County Home Inspections has been delivering top-notch inspections and serving central Iowa homes ever since.
Jeff was born and grew up in Ames. At an early age, he enjoyed spending time on job sites with his father, who owned Cyclone Electric, Inc. His family also owned Spencer’s Apiary. These experiences gave him a love of construction and a strong work ethic. In high school, Jeff continued to expand his knowledge of the trades by working at Electric Wholesale and at Iowa State Student Apartments as a maintenance worker. After graduation, he moved into HVAC work and general contracting. This is where he developed a deep appreciation for seeing projects go from design and conceptual drawings to finished projects. He also enjoyed observing and learning about the other trades.
Cheryl grew up on a farm near Harlan, Iowa. She earned a Political Science degree from Iowa State University. Cheryl works for the City of Ames. Jeff and Cheryl live in Story County, cheer on Iowa State sports, and enjoy musical theater. Over the years, they have rescued many pets and love the joy their furry friends bring into their lives.
When conducting home inspections, Jeff believes his clients should gain a comprehensive understanding of the home’s condition, so they have a better sense of their investment. He is very methodical and thorough in his inspections and takes time after they are complete to answer any questions the client may have and go over any areas of concern. As part of the inspection, clients receive a comprehensive home inspection report with photos and details on areas of concern. Jeff remains available to his clients via phone or email after the inspection if they have additional questions. Great customer service and helping clients feel informed about their homes are his goals.
Starting out, Story County Home Inspections, LLC focused on buyers purchasing homes. Over time, the company has grown its scope to include thermal imaging, multi-family housing, commercial buildings, new constructions, remodels, punch list review, quality control, phase/draw, environmental, occupancy/condition, disaster housing, and indoor air quality and mold testing. With this expanded scope, Story County Home Inspections, LLC has inspected over 18,000 properties across 19 states.
Jeff was easy to work with. Everything was handled through email and phone calls. Quick, convenient, and timely. Had my report sent the same day as the inspection. Definitely recommend!
